John Shirley has a blog...

And it is fascinating. I just finished Crawlers tonight, and Demons last week - these are two of the most engrossing books I have ever read. Even better, this man is so intelligent and aware. Hell, he uses the word verisimilitude. I love a man with a large vocabulary and the knowledge to use it.

After reading a small bit of what he has to say, I am struck - this shouldn't be so rare!

Why does it seem that america is populated with sheep? Sheep, not only so easily led, but are actually enjoying and preferring to be led? Oblivious to what is really happening her, and in the rest of the world?

Always question! Question what is fed to you and question the motivation! I'm not talking about your loved ones, you family - I'm talking about that TV, the media, the newspaper, the commercials! Not only do you have a choice between Coke & Pepsi - you may choose juice, water or wine. If the sex, violence, or even the mindless chatter on TV bothers you, remember - you do not _have_ to own a TV.

Oh, I know... "Oh, but what about PBS, the Discovery channel, etc?". What do you want to learn? What do you want to know more about? Get out there and learn it, experience it yourself firsthand. It's far easier to become a gardener by gardening than it is to only watch other people doing it. I think this applies to most things in life. My 2004 new years resolution is to learn to knit. I've read many books on the subject, but never really progress until I sit down and do it, make mistakes, and learn from them.

Ok, I'm a little off from the original point of this post, but I'll blame that on the glass of cabernet I had :)

Oh yea Happy Valentine's Day!! Don't buy into the consumerism, just spend the day in bed...
