I have never seen so many birds in one place as I have this morning. Many of the same we have been seeing, and now big Robins and little Tufted Titmouse (or would that be Titmice?). We think it because the lawn was mowed yesterday, plus the huge chunk of septic field Marc cleared - all the bugs living there are probably migrating up the lawn. The Black Widow was freaky! I would have got a picture of it, but I wanted it dead as quick as possible.
We also moved the bird bath a little closer to the feeder, and there are now more birds using it. If I guessed there were 50 birds out there, I'd say that was a pretty low guess. A hundred may be a little high, but not much. It feels like the birdhouse at the zoo is right outside my window.
With the clearing of the field, I'm starting to get a good idea of how much land we really have - and it needs a lot of work. The septic field is so choked with weeds, it may be wise to try a weed killer and then seed it in the spring. I think I need to hire someone to clear the field where I want the garden - it just isn't feasible by hand. When we dug in for the leveling of the shed, there were more earthworms than I expected, but there was something else also - after looking in one of the gardening books (thank you Lori!), I'm almost positive they were grubs - big white larvae looking with a brown head. Creepy.
The plant-life in our area has been gorgeous this week - it is truly Autumn, we even have a nice bit of red and orange foliage along the property edge, near the field.
